‘Tis the season for viral infections…and I’m only adding to verity of that statement. I started to feel fluish and drained of energy from Saturday. I saw my GP on Monday who advised me to just focus on rest & good nutrition. Although I secretly hoped she’d put me on antibiotics to expedite recovery, I am also relieved that it wasn’t serious enough to require medication. I came across this quote earlier on in the week and it couldn’t have been more perfectly timed:
Fitness isn’t punishment; it’s a blessing. Nutrition isn’t restrictive; it’s healing. Health isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing and may not look the same for everyone, but it is worth something fighting for.
It’s times like these that really make me appreciate what it means to be healthy. I know the definition of “healthy” is subjective, but in this context I am referring to it’s most basic definition: being of good health & able to carry out day-to-day functions with ease. Fortunately I’ve been feeling much better since yesterday but to play it safe, I’m waiting till tomorrow to exercise. I know there are mixed opinions about working out when ill, but I prefer to take a conservative approach. From past experience, trying to work out when sick has only prolonged recovery. I bought a pair of boxing gloves last weekend so I’m especially excited to put them to use.
As for eating, I almost laughed when the doctor asked me if I had a loss of appetite. Tell me I’m not the only one who constantly feels munchy when she’s down with the flu…preferably for all things carbs. Especially for the sake of energy, being down with the flu is when I really try to bring my “eating right” A-game. I’ve been too tired to take many photos but a few meals from earlier this week include:
- Daal (lentils) & rice
- Plenty of simple green smoothies (almond milk, frozen banana & spinach)
- Chicken soup
A foodie highlight was trying out a Magnum ice cream bar…finally!
Clearly I was more concerned about eating it before it melted rather than getting a perfect shot. It definitely lived up to my expectations. Good call on Unilever to introduce Magnum into the Indian market! On the plus side I’ve fully caught up completely with Mistresses & Devious Maids. Anyone know when season 3 of Devious Maids starts? Fingers crossed it’s September! Seriously though- what.a.finale.
Do you work out when you’re sick?
What TV show are you currently hooked on?
I love that quote Khushboo – health is most definitely an individual preference and what works for one might not for another – that being said, most times I do workout when I am sick – but it’s been years since I caught the flu- but, when I was running a fever that last time I caught it, I could barely muster getting to the loo let alone working out and I had a total loss of appetite – even chocolate was un-appetizing!!! But for just a cold or something, I gotta sweat it out and eat like a pig! 🙂
Mistresses has been one of my guilty indulgences this summer too! I don’t know why but I just feel so sorry for poor, lost Savi – And I wanna smoosh a Magnum choco bar in April’s face! Have you watched Rookie Blue or Nashville? They are 2 of my other favs. Happy Thursday lady!
Haha don’t hate me but I kinda love April- there’s something about her that makes me smile!
I’m a big fan of sweating it out when ill…but of course it depends on the severity of symptoms. Hope you feel better soon!
Thanks Shaks- all better now 🙂
Hope your feeling better- I don’t work out when I’m sick except for my mouth…..and damn you got some solid eats in. I only crave butter when I’m sick which means finding all the right vehicles for it.
Sick or not, nothing beats buttered toast!!
So glad you feel better Khushboo!
Honestly, when I am down with the flu, there is no WAY I could workout. I mean, I have the hardest time then to even move to the kitchen and make tea. That’s why I alway call Mom when I’m sick 🙂
Moms to the rescue- always 🙂
I hope that you’re feeling better lady! For me it depends on the severity of my sickness, but I’ll usually ease up or skip workouts until I feel better.
Thanks, Sam- feeling loads better now :)!
I keep my appetite when I’m sick too!! I’ve always thought it must have something to do with needing to keep energy up to fight the bug. Like you said, food is healing. feel better!!
Thanks Charlotte! Food def trumps medication in terms of healing :)!
Hope you’re feeling better! That Magnum bar should help. 😉
I like to exercise when I’m sick, but only if it’s safe. Obviously, if I can’t breathe or am puking rest is a much better idea. If it’s just a cold I think sweating it out can help though!
Ice cream cures all ;)!
Awwr no! I hope you feel better soon, lady! And I totally know what you mean about being super munchie when you don’t feel well. Unless I’m having some issues with my stomach or feeling nauseous, then all I want to do is snack… and dry carbs are my drug of choice. Cereal, toast, crackers, pretzels, white rice… Perfection.
YUM! Speaking of pretzels- have you tried dipping them in mustard- such a weird but delish combo!
I work out ALL THE TIME – regardless of how I am feeling. If there is a tornado coming, I will be on that elliptical trainer! LOL!!!!!!!
And my FAVORITE TV SHOW = How I Met Your MOTHER!! I cannot stop!
Daaay-um girl, you’re a beast 😉
LOVE that quote! And I think you are spot on with your thoughts. Being able to bounce back from being sick is a great way to appreciate your health!
And I just finished New Girl! I’ve decided that I’m going to stop binge watching shows and just wait for everything to start back up next month. 🙂 I have no control when all the episodes are at my disposal!!
I’m still waiting for our local dvd store to get Mindy Project- so ready to binge watch it 😉
i absolutely love that quote. I want to make a shirt or something. I dont work out either when i am sick although fresh air might help a little. hope you feel better.
If you make a shirt, make a spare one for me 😉
Oh now, I’m sorry to hear you’re been under the weather. I’m hoping by now you’ve completely recovered and are feeling like yourself again. You do exactly what I do when I’m sick: lots of rest, no working out, and as many nutrient dense foods as I can gulp down. I think it speeds up the recovery process. Plus lots and lots of sleep. Feel better buddy.
Thanks, friend! I was downing green smoothies like no other- never a bad thing :)!
