There is one reason in particular why I can’t even imagine turning full-time vegetarian or giving up carbs: Sushi
Apparently it’s similar to marmite: you either love it or hate it. Â Marmite I get, but why/how anyone could hate sushi is beyond me! Â Especially after a recent sushi lunch out with my sister, my love for these Japanese rolls of deliciousness was only reinforced.
What’s not to like:
1) It tastes amazing:Â And this is coming from someone who grew up pretending to be allergic to fish in order to avoid having to eat it…although fish fingers didn’t seem to count. Â As long as the rolls aren’t filled with cream cheese, tempura or mayo, I could easily eat any.
2) It’s healthy: There’s no doubt that eating fish is good for the body, and many types of sushi provide healthy doses of fish oils that help keep your cardiovascular system healthy. For the most part, sushi can easily provide various nutrients in one bite: omega 3’s & protein in the fish, reduced risk of cholesterol as well as vitamin A & C in seaweed, and iodine & calcium in fish meats like shrimp.  No wonder Japanese are known for their high life expectancy rate.
3) Infinite varieties: Although there are so many different fish types used, I tend to gravitate towards rolls filled with salmon, tuna, and eel. Â I personally prefer the rolls filled with fish, but it’s a relief that I can still eat at sushi restaurants with my vegetarian friends who enjoy cucumber/avocado rolls. Â Between the wasabi, ginger, Togarashi chili powder, and soy sauce, it’s easy to somewhat customize each roll on the spot.
Fortunately there is a sushi place 5 minutes away from my sister’s place in Guangzhou which serves the freshest-tasting sushi and thickest slabs of sashimi that I’ve ever had (as pictured above). I only wish that they served a few of the “Americanised” rolls like salmon avocado & spicy tuna. Â If opting for Japanese food in China instead of Chinese is so wrong, I don’t want to be right :)!
Are you a sushi fan? Â If so, what’s your favorite kind? Â If not, I’m not sure we can be friends- kiiidding ;)!
I am a sashimi fan more than sushi but I do love it all! The dishes look delicious.
When I’m craving protein, sashimi is definitely my preference!
I am a huge sushi fan…twice a week I get my favorite Spicy Shrimp Avocado Roll from Whole Foods. It makes my Monday 100% better.
Happy Friday! Hope you have a great weekend.
Oh boy Whole Foods sushi is my favorite- love their brown rice salmon avocado rolls!
I can’t do the raw fish… but i love veggie sushi! M favorite is avocado, asparagus, and beets.
Oh wow i’ve never seen sushi with beets…fun variety!
I’ve only had tuna sashimi once but MAN it was so delicious!!! I’m definitely a fan 🙂
Oh if you a fish fan in general, you need to get trying on the other sashimi varieties!
i do enjoy sushi, but i can’t eat the raw kind… are you not friends with me now? haha. i agree with ameena, i like the spicy shrimp avocado rolls – provided it is cooked.. i love the veggie rolls, sometimes i ask them to add cream cheese – that’s the American in me!
Hahah I think I can make an exception :)! I can’t seem to comment on your blog, I think I am in your spam :(!
i LOVE sushi for all of these reasons too. and now i have a major craving for some…
Haha I have a never-ending sushi craving :)!
Before I went vegan I had a testy relationship with Sushi. When I first tried it during my first year of uni I loved it but a nasty meal at Yo Sushi a couple of years later put me off of it for good. I do like going to Sushi places with a group however because finding a veggie option is inevitable and I don’t stick out like a sore thumb – even if it’s just edamame, miso soup and an avocado roll – I’m happy.
Ohh next time try the seaweed salad- perfect veggie option! That sucks about your Yo Sushi experience, I’ve always been a big fan of the place!
Great minds think alike…I had veggie sushi for lunch yesterday! Love it!
Great minds indeed :)!
Omg. I read this post in the afternoon and even though I’d cooked lunch already, I went n bought some sushi. Love it. And I’m vegetarian.
Hahah that’s definitely something I would have done- hope you enjoyed it :)!
Sushi is a favorite of mine… for sure! Raw salmon and tuna are my personal favorites!
We would make great sushi partners 🙂
Gah I LOVE sushi! Also the only reason I could never be vegetarian.
Glad you share my sentiments :)!
Oh man Marmite is absolute dirt. It is horrid. So is vegemite. I don’t get fish on my sushi (vegetarian alert) but I do eat a lot of “sushi” with a variety of vegetables. Brown rice with avocado and cucumbers, veggie mix, anything with a lot of wasabi.
Hahah i’m not sure how I feel about marmite…but I definitely don’t love it! Brown rice sushi is the best, more avo the better!
SUUUUSHI. Spicy crab, sunset roll (at my sushi place, it’s spicy crab topped with salmon), scallop tempura, shrimp & salmon nigiri…so many!
Oh wow that sunset roll sounds amazing!
I think sushi is one of those things that polarises people – you either love it or you hate it. If it’s fresh and colourful and full of flavour and texture, it’s hard to beat xx
Sushi is definitely unbeatable, in all aspects :)!
As a vegetarian, sushi options are obviously limited, but Trader Joes sells some amazing vegetarian sushi/tempura for on-the-go. We’ve also made sushi at home with random fillings like shredded carrots and pickles.
I was surprised at how easy sushi it is to make at home…quinoa works great in lieu of the rice!
oooh I haven’t thought of using that as a potential ingredient but it makes sense!
I LOVE sushi! I could eat it every day, but I try to keep it to only once a week. 😛
My favourites are salmon rolls, tuna rolls and salmon sashimi! Also I love seaweed salad and order it every single time!
Clearly we would make the best sushi buddies 🙂
oh my gosh, I LOVE sushi!!!!
That’s a food I could eat everyday (if I could afford it! 😛 )
It’s really hard to pick my favorite but I like salmon a lot.
Rainbow rolls are fun too, I get to eat all kinds of fish!
Haha seriously- each bite is a yum surprise!
Reading this post is making me crave ST sushi for dinner. Let’s see how I am going to manage S to eat there again tonight. Wish you were still here, I know you’d definitely be up for round 4 of ST:)
Haha I would have definitely been down for some…I actually bought some sushi for the flight!
