My night yesterday was way more hectic than I prefer for a Monday. I don’t want to get graphic but let’s just say it involved me, my bathroom, multiple trips, and a spoilt avocado that I ate on Sunday night…fill in the blanks as you please. Despite all that, I have been buzzing all day. Ever heard of seasonal affective disorder?
SAD: A person with SAD typically experiences symptoms of depression as winter approaches and daylight hours become shorter.
Although I can’t say I have ever had SAD, I sure have am HAPPY! Nothing beats waking up to natural sunlight (actually going to bed to rainstorms is pretty sweet too :)). I know, I know I sound like a crazy weather lady with all my recent weather talk but blame it on my years of living in London: those Brits love to discuss weather. Although I do enjoy the occasional bout of rain, “snuggling up with a movie and something hot to drink” gets old pretty fast. I get that rain is a gift to nature but more often than not, it pisses on my parade…literally:
- It requires so much extra baggage: I once made the foolish mistake of leaving my umbrella at home and let’s just say: thank goodness I wasn’t wearing white that day ;)!
- My hair: I am not high-maintenance in the slightest BUT my hair is an exception…I can’t stand the way rain frizzes it up, umbrella or not!
- It’s dangerous: Two weeks ago, heavy rains caused landslides which actually killed somebody , aaaannnnd the winds can be powerful enough to uproot trees. A showdown between two faces of nature?
- Eats up time: Any fellow Mumbai-ite will agree that getting things done in this city is generally a slow process. Add in rain-induced traffic, unscheduled train delays, etc and we’re working at snails’ pace.
- It makes me lazy: As much as I love lounging around in my pajamas all day, sadly not every day is a Sunday. While I rarely let the rains defeat my workout plans, there’s a positive correlation between rain & my motivation hitting rock bottom.
Now that the monsoons are d-o-n-e for 2011, any ideas how I ‘celebrated’ this morning? Naturally with something I haven’t done since April: by VOLUNTARILY getting wet… wearing a pair of goggles instead of trainers… compensating for my recent lack of vitamin D…tanning…reeking of chlorine..swimming outdoors….life is good!
Are you an all-weather person or do you share my sentiments towards rain?
I am not a huge fan of downpours, but they sure do beat snow storms! If I don’t have to go outside when it’s raining, I’m perfectly fine. But I’m with you on the hair thing as well as just being all wet – regardless of if you have an umbrella or not.
i kinda like the rain… but thats maybe because here we never get any. and when we do people go running out with their cameras and it makes the news. and ye… why does it slow everything down x a million??!! sooooo frustrating!! summer is nearly over here too which is kinda fun because it means we get a few months of NICE weather- no humidity but not winter freezing yet! and CREMBOs hit the store. we have a chocolate thats only available in winter.. and i spied them in the supermarket yesterday woohoo. did i just blab about the weather? i believe so. and i’m not british. hope you feeling better after your avocado fiasco ( also hope it hasnt put you off avocados!)
I’m just like you with the lazy feeling, all I want to do is sit there with a cocoa and fluffy socks when it rains, which isn’t great when it’s rain all week. Having the SAD ting must be soo hard though. Swimming outside is the best feeling – glad you rebelled and had fun girl!
I’m right there with you! I love the rain occassionally for the snuggling and drinking hot chocolate or coffee spiked with bourbon. But I love being outside and not getting wet in the process!
I hate hate hate rainy days! I am never productive. Haha, I tell my mom all the time that I have SAD 😀
I think I welcome all types of weather, even rainy days! I think there is something very beautiful about storms. Don’t get me wrong though, I love me some sunshine!
I definitely share your rain sentiments- ESPECIALLY in regard to the hair, which in itself induces stress…plus I hate that damp/sticky feeling in general, ughhh.
Oh and I don’t doubt SAD, having lived in the UK I know exactly what it’s like on those rare sunny days- everyone is like a different person all of a sudden
I feeling your pain during the rain! It make me lazy to venture outside my house, discourages my walk to/from the gym, and does nothing for my hair! So glad the monsoons are over in Bombay 🙂
