February 2018 Wellness Goals

Hey guys! Hope everyone’s February is off to a fab start. Although I don’t always post about them, I’m a big fan of goal-setting.  While I definitely have various long-term goals in my mind, short-term goals work better for me. Because they’re actionable (i.e. much less daunting), I’m more likely to stay committed.  Over time those small actions eventually lead to massive results.

New month

For the sake of accountability and potentially inspiration, I wanted to share a few of my wellness goals for the month ahead:

1) Bring back apple cider vinegar: A couple of years ago, I was in a habit of starting my day with apple cider vinegar and warm water, but then switched to warm water and lemon juice. While drinking any water first thing in the morning can help flush the digestive system, rehydrate the body and set the tone for a healthy day ahead, I’m ready for a change.  Fun fact: even though apple cider vinegar and lemon juice seem acidic, both actually become alkaline when consumed.  Keeping the body alkaline naturally helps with keeping energy levels high and also better able to fight off illness & disease.

2) Reduce my coffee intake: I currently drink 3 cups a day but some days that can go up to 4. More than even needing that much caffeine during my day, my consumption has become a case of habit. I actually love herbal teas and even the mere elixir of hot water with lemon and ginger yet almost opt for coffee out of default. The aim is to limit my intake to 2 cups a day (one in the morning and another in the evening) and then switch over to herbal teas. I’ve lately embraced golden lattes which will help tremendously. If you guys want me to share my golden latte recipe, let me know…it’s seriously oh so yummy!

3) Replace TV time with more book Kindle time: I go through phases with reading but want to be stay consistent this year. Consequently I’m committing to do #12BooksIn12Months and want to ensure I stay on track in February. While January involved Judgement Detox by Gabby Detox, I’m going with a different genre this month: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.

4) Experiment with at least one new plant-based recipe each week: One of my not-so-guilty pleasures is browsing through recipe books. As much as I love the internet and all that it offers, nothing beats flicking through a real-life recipe book. Thanks to a number of my very kind friends, I’ve built up a decent collection and it’s time to actually go one step beyond ‘oohing’ & ‘aahing’. I think my first hit will be this gorgeous Basmati & wild rice with chickpeas, currants & herbs dish from the Jerusalem cookbook by Yotam Ottolenghi & Sami Tamimi.

And my top priority for February:

5) Avoid phone browsing (i.e. social media, email, Whatsapp) until I’ve finished my spiritual practice for the morning: While I don’t really fall into the comparison trap, this goal is more for the sake of adding more mindfulness into my day.  As someone who browses Instagram as soon as her eyes open in the morning, I’m starting to appreciate the importance of connecting with myself before connecting with others.  Otherwise it’s all too easy to unknowingly feed off other people’s energy & low vibrations which can ultimately affect how the rest of the day pans out.  That and the fact that social media browsing can be a huge time sucker, ha!

Hold me to it guys!
