3 things from the weekend

Hi guys!  How was your weekend?  It was a long weekend in Mumbai as Friday was Independence Day. The last few days involved a nice balance of fun, food, exercise and relaxation…and I’m about to share 3 things from the weekend:

1) Although it’s nearing the end of the season, I finally got my share of mangoes.  I froze some with the intention of making mango smoothies but those are yet to happen.  After eating a piece straight out the freezer I quickly forgot about smoothies- you guys, the texture of frozen mango chunks tastes exactly like mango sorbet!  Alfonso mangoes are overly sweet (I know I know, I’m a terrible Indian for saying that) so I paired the chunks with some almond butter to tame down the sweetness. The combo tasted heavenly!  Almond butter & frozen mango is totes the new peanut butter & banana.

2) First Chef & now The Hundred-Foot Journey …I am loving the upsurge of foodie movies lately! I really enjoyed both, but The Hundred-Foot Journey slightly more.  It involves a cultural clash between an Indian family that sets up an Indian restaurant in France across the street from a Michelin-star restaurant & the latter’s owner.  As much as the sight of French delicacies made me drool, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride for Indian cooking.  We may not be busting out glamorous dishes like frog legs & croissants, but there’s something to be said about our use of spices to create intricate & unreplicable flavours.  It’s a total feel-good movie, so definitely check out The Hundred-Foot Journey if it’s playing near you!

3) The best workouts always tend to be the ones that are least expected…am I right or am I right!  I planned to hit the gym on Saturday morning for a lower body workout, but nixed that plan when I woke up- I just couldn’t bear the idea of being in a gym.  After spending a good portion of my day in bed, I eventually decided I needed to kill the lethargy…even if it just meant a quick workout at home.  Although it only lasted 20 minutes, I felt like I got a solid workout in- definitely one to try out when time is of the essence.  I used a set of kettlebells, but those can easily be replaced with dumbbells.  As always this workout is what works for me, so please tailor it to fit your capabilities:

  1. Mangoes and almond butter???? Why o why have I never ever thought of this?!?!?!
I cannot wait to give this a go now! Other than bananas, I’ve tried dates with AB and thats about it!
I saw the trailer for the 100 foot journey – and it sure does sound intriguing – but I don’t think I could handle ALL that food porn! 🙂 Most recent film I’ve seen was 21 Jump Street . And random thing from the weekend was my dog ate my daughter’s bowl of ice cream when we stepped out to talk to our neighbors – and the best part was, she (our dog) left behind ALL the chocolate chips!!! How????
    Happy Monday Khushboo!

    1. Dates & nut butter are another GREAT comb! That’s SO funny about your dog- good to see that she is considerate enough to leave a bit behind for your daughter ;)! Hope you had extras in the freezer.

  2. I actually just messaged my friend to see that movie next weekend- Yay for foodie movies! I’m not a huge fan of pairing fruit with nut butter…I don’t mind things like strawberries with dark chocolate though!

  3. Hooray for long weekends my friend, especially those that involve relaxing and great eats.

I’m a huge Helen Mirren fan so I need to check out this movie. And Indian cuisine is phenomenal. I only discovered it a few years back, and it’s safe to say I’m hooked. I get Pakistani eats whenever I hang with my sister-in-laws family and while I know it’s different, the seasoning is incredible.

  4. Mango and Almond Butter sounds pretty amazing!
I love to drizzle almond butter over blueberries. So good!
And I definitely need to go to the movies soon. I can not even remember the last movie I saw!

  5. I’m pretty sure bananas will always takes the #1 spot for me when it comes to fruits to pair with nut butters, but I have to agree with you about frozen mangoes — the texture is just inSANE. I always mean to make smoothies with em too, but they’re way too good on their own to waste in a smoothie 😆 And the last movie I saw was The Giver. It was pretty good, but the book was obviously better 😛

  6. Almond butter and mango? I am intrigued…but I have trouble picturing something other than Ab and banana 😉 As for last film – I watched Gravity on TV last night, but the last one I was in theatres was the Ninja Turtles movie!

  7. I really want to see Chef, but I didn’t know the premise of The Hundred-Foot Journey until now… and now I want to see it too!

The last film I saw was The World’s End – and I got really excited when I saw High Wycombe station in it and realized I’d been there! Haha.

    1. If you’re going to choose between the 2 movies, I’d definitely go for The Hundred-Foot Journey..it has more depth to it!

  8. WHOA mango and almond butter!? I MUST try this. Maybe throw them on a rice cake….just to further my obsession? HA. My mom saw The Hundred-Foot Journey and LOVED it. She said I NEED to see it.

  9. Mmm mangoes and nutbutter would be amazing! I actually love grapefruit and NB (trust – the fattiness cuts the sourness sooo well) But I’ll have to be boring and say apples are my fave vehicle 😉 Great looking workout btw! Pinning…
