Friday Favorites: 11/01

Thanks for all your warm wishes to feel better.  Aside from the occasional burst of drowsiness from the antibiotics, I’m back to normal.  After 10 days of little exercise, I hit up the gym yesterday to wean myself back in.  The initial few minutes were tough but it felt good to get my body moving again.  Anyways, I have quite a few favorites to share so let’s go:

1) It’s been ages since I found myself getting lost in a book but The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul did the trick.  Without giving the story away, Deborah Rodriguez tells the story of 5 very different women whose lives cross paths in Kabul. Set during the period the Taliban regime gained strength, it was especially interesting to gain some insight into the life of women in Afghanistan.

2) I’m almost embarrassed to admit how much I enjoyed the first season of Devious Maids.  I decided to watch it primarily because it’s produced by Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives’ creator) & Eva Longoria.  Based on 5 Latino maids working for the rich & famous of Beverly Hills, it’s as glamorous and drama-filled as Desperate Housewives.  Bring on season 2!

3) This is a pretty generic favorite, but I can’t get enough of bananas lately.  Sliced, frozen, and mixed with peanut butter? Heavenly!  Even more so when dark chocolate is thrown into the mix!  Just make sure the bananas develop a few black spots before peeling & freezing!

4) Have you seen Virgin America’s new Safety Video?  This might be the first safety video that’s actually held my attention for the entire duration.  I’m normally an Emirates girl, but I’m starting to think otherwise.

And my favorite purchase from October:

5) My iPad Mini i.e. the only silver lining of the rupee weakening against the dollar ;).  Seriously though: can this be any cuter…or lighter! It’s perfect for bedtime or on-the-go browsing when I can’t be bothered to pull out my laptop.  I’m sure I’ll be eating my words within a few months given Apple’s track record, but the battery life on it is amazing!

And to all of you celebrating Diwali this weekend: Hope this year shines happiness, love, prosperity and good health into your future.

And to the rest of you: Have a great weekend :)!

What fruit are you loving these days?

What’s your favorite airline to fly?

  1. Now that’s one heck of a safety video!!!! LOVE it! Love the little girl singing too! I don’t fly often, but when I do, I fly Southwest – used to be Airtran.
Even Amanda was raving about frozen banana slices…they might become my fav when I finally try them out!
Glad you were able to drag yourself to the gym – I so love the first workout after an illness – just feels like all the gunk is being sweated out 🙂
I caught one episode of Devious minds and was not too impressed, but seeing you liked one of my fav’s -mistresses- I need to check out D.M. again …
    Have you seen Nashville?
    Hope your weekend is lovely!

    1. Ooh you must try out frozen banana slices soon!! And please give Devious Maids another shot, preferably starting from the beginning- I am almost certain you will be hooked 😀

  2. Argh, the video won’t play for me, I’ll have to try rebooting- I really want to watch it haha! I’ve flown Emirates before (seeing as its the only airline to go to Iran) as a kid and I LOVED it…seriously, no other airline compares!

I bought that book for my friend from (ironically) the airport as a last minute gift- I’ll have to ask her her thoughts on it!

These days I’m all about strawberries- I blended an entire punnet in my smoothie this morning..oops. Have a great weekend buddy!

      1. Thanks so much Arman! Strawberries are finally coming back in season so I’m pretty sure that I will be sharing your sentiments any day now :)!

  3. Girl, can I ever relate to the banana obsession… I’m still -okay- with fresh ones, but frozen? NO control whatsoever. If I have a bag of them near me when I’m sitting? The whole thing will be gone without me even realizing it. Ridiculous.

As for airline, I only really fly Westjet. I flew Delta when I went to HLS and was REALLY disappointed — they served peanuts!!

    1. Wow that’s pretty appalling about Delta, especially given how popular peanut allergies are! What ever happened to serving pretzels??

  4. I so have been thinking about getting an ipad or ipad mini too! Seeing yours makes me want one even more.

Loving that frozen banana snack idea. I’ve had it before blended up as ‘banana’ ice cream but never as whole pieces will have to try.

Glad to hear you are on the mend and feeling better.

  5. I’m glad you’re feeling better now!

I’ve got to admit, I was a big fan of Desperate Housewives back in the day – I loved all the drama! I haven’t seen Devious Maids, but it sounds good. Unfortunately I barely have to to even workout these days let alone pick up another tv show. 😛

I hear you on the banana love. They’ve been my #1 favourite fruit for years!

  6. I’m glad you managed to hit the gym. Getting back into the routine always feels great even if you cannot do an intense workout.
My fav airlines are Thai and Korean. They are simply wonderful. I hear Cathay and Singapore are great airlines too.

  7. What a great book to read… I don’t like reading, but that sounds interesting. I can’t even imagine the life for women in Afghanistan.. so sad. It’s the women and children that get affected the most.. it really puts things in perspective how fortunate we really are even when life is far from perfect.
My favorite fruit is banana of course, I need to spread my wings a bit more. 🙂
Not sure what’s popular in the fall though.
