Homemade Almond Milk

I’ve expressed my love for Apple products in the past, but I’ve felt differently over the past weekend…specifically towards my iPhone.  Is it me or is updating software to iOS 6.1. a royal pain the glutes?  First I got an error message that I didn’t have enough memory which prompted me to delete a huge amount of photos.  Once it started downloading, I received this error message several times:

Although I had no luck (hence my state of distraught), I managed to update my Instagram app to view videos…all is well again ;)!  While deleting photos I came across a number of almond milk images I took way back in February and have been meaning to blog about since.

Almond Milk

Especially as “Almond milk in Mumbai” is a common search engine term that frequently lands people up on my blog, it’s probably about time I put those pictures to use.  If you’re looking for almond milk in Mumbai, stop right now!  I’ve done the groundwork, searched high & low.  While tetra packets of almond milk are nowhere to be found, raw almonds, water, and vanilla extract freely are available…and I promise making a batch at home isn’t as time-consuming as it seems:

Raw Almond Milk

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup almonds
  • 1-2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Method:

1) Soak almonds in water for at least 4 hours

2) Drain nuts & rinse

3) Add nuts & 1-2 cups of water to blender.  Blend on low for 1 minutes.  Stop & then blend on low for 1 more minute.

4) Set a strainer over a large bowl and line it with a cheesecloth.  Pour blender mixture into cloth so that the milk can go through it and the strainer into the bowl.

5) Press the pulp with a spoon to squeeze out the last of the liquid.

6) Re-add the smooth milk to your blender with vanilla extract and do a quick whizz. For a bit of variation or a hint of sweetness, try adding in the cinnamon, cocoa powder or dates.

7) Store in the fridge for up to 2-3 days.  As it doesn’t keep for too long due to the absence of preservatives, I prefer to make smaller batches at a time

Tips:

  1. To avoid separation, give the milk a good shake prior to use.
  2. The leftover almond pulp may be tossed into baked goods or used as a skin/facial moisturiser.

And because it’s almost impossible to talk about milk without this playing in my head:

♫ ♫ My milkshake almond milk brings all the boys to the yard, damn right it’s better than yours ♫ ♫

…I’m talking to you Blue Diamond!

Ever tried making almond milk, or any milk, at home?

What milk do you drink regularly?

  1. Wow this reminds me of the Chinese medicine book my mamma bought in the 80’s, it has recipes for nut milks! Very cool and good on you for taking the initiative and making your own when none could be found! Looks delicous too 🙂 I drink raw jersey milk from my nonna or another local farmer I know- so creamy and delicous- jersey has even higher fat than normal cows milk “Holstein” and such varieties! It’s so good and the thick level of cream at the top which I swipe a teaspoon of before mixing in is such a treat 🙂

  2. hey, im going to try that like now!
I’m going for S4. I feel I need to wait for iphone to allow bluetooth transfer from all device, till I buy that!
I hope you have a safe flight to u.k!

  3. Never tried almond milk – how does it taste?! Super obsessed with soy milk though – it’s so creamy and yummy and I can’t believe it’s low calorie 🙂 it’s a staple in my oats and lattes now. I actually can’t stand the taste of normal milk, unless its yoghurt, so I usually only mix it my coffee. I love almonds though, so let’s see – maybe I’ll make a batch soon!

    1. If you don’t make a batch, I highly recommend giving it a shot when you’re in New York- it’s yummy! Although when it comes to coffee, soy milk is my fave 🙂

  4. Oh Gosh, I feel you on the technology thing – it sucks big time when something doesn’t work, I am so bad at being patient when it comes to this. I still have the iPhone 4 and it goes crazy once in a while, so I definitely need to look into a possibility to buy a new one.
And same here with almond milk! We can only buy the sweetened, which I don’t want to, so I might need to give the homemade one a try, thank you for sharing!!

    1. I completely understand about not buying sweetened almond milk- it’s nice once in a a while but I rather not drink it regularly!

  5. I just upgraded all my Apple software this weekend too. It was definitely a pain in the butt, and I had some issues initially, but it helped when I connected my phone/iPad to the computer and updated through iTunes. It’s nice t to have those update notifications on my home screen though 🙂

I don’t really drink a lot of milk (except for in my cappuccinos), but when I do, lately it’s been almond. I don’t have a problem with cow’s mik, but almond has been tasting pretty good lately. And I’ve never tried to make my own because we have an abundance of it here, buuuuut I do have to get relative when it comes to a lot of other products that don’t cater to my allergies.

    Happy Monday, girlie!!

    1. I’m excited to get my fix of cow’s milk in London next week – if only the organic kind was available here!

  6. Yay, a fellow Apple lover! I just updated my iPhone too, and it was so frustrating. I decided to do it while I was sleeping, but about 30 minutes in, it got all upset and woke me up and then took about another 20 minutes to finish. Not the best night of sleep 😉 But at least it’s done haha.

I used to make almond milk at home fairly often. It was so tasty, and I loved eating the almond pulp with fruit + almond milk. I’ve kind of gotten lazy though… maybe I’ll do it again though! It really isn’t too hard.

    Have a great week!

      1. No, it pretty much just tastes like soaked almonds which I love! By itself it’s kind of grainy, but with the almond milk, it becomes almost like soft cereal? It’s been a while since I’ve had it, but that’s how I remember it 🙂

  7. I haven’t tried uploading the new software! And now I kind of don’t want too. I sometimes find my phone goes a little crazy whenever I upload big things like that.
I’m not the biggest milk lover, like I’d never drink it alone but in smoothies or dressings I love it. I just made hemp milk over the weekend and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it!
Your almond milk looks so good! I actually haven’t made my own almond milk but hemp milk? That sounds wrong. I need to try this!

  8. I love that you make your own almond milk! It’s readily available here in the states so I don’t think I’ll be making it at home any time soon. Although, I bet it tastes so fresh that I may just have to try it out. Yum!

    1. I won’t lie- if it were readily avail here, I probably would just head to the supermarket whenever my stash ran low 😉

    1. Adding vanilla extract is a must for me- don’t love homemade almond milk nearly as much without the hint of vanilla!

  9. Haha, oh yes, I love that we both posted about homemade almond milk today! And that we both store ours in flip-top drink containers, even better. Just like homemade almond milk is even better than store bought–short of that really short shelf life business. YUM. And oh-so-perfect in coffee.

      1. I tried it out one morning and it worked–But I also did a small ratio–very little milk in my coffee, since I really prefer hot coffee black (while my iced coffee HAS to have milk…who knows why. Tastebuds.).

  10. I just can’t manage to make myself like Almond Milk. I’ve tried so many different varieties and I find it so chalky and gross. Maybe homemade is better? I might give this a shot! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Have you tried Almond Breeze? I really like that variety! Otherwise definitely give homemade a shot, Jenn 🙂

  11. I love almond milk! I’ve thought about making my own, but I’ve never gotten around to it. Maybe one of these days. You make it look so easy!

    1. Although Greek yogurt is freely avail in the US, consider homemade Greek yogurt another thing you can make with a cheesecloth :)!

  12. Almond milk is my milk of choice, unless getting a latte as we’ve disused..then it’s soy becasue that is all that Starbucks carries hahaha. This homemade almond milk is amazing!! Great job!

  13. Had to laugh at the title of this post…cute.

I love almond milk but for some reason I can’t drink it anymore. This looks delicious!

Such an easy DIY version just needs a little planning ahead, thank you for sharing 😉
Just thought to share a piece of info for those who don’t know yet- you can now find Silk almond milk from Natures basket in Andheri 🙂 Yayy!!

    1. Thanks for sharing – fortunately it’s becoming more commonly available in Mumbai…you better believe I stock up just in case 😉
