Wednesday tangents

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know that part of me kinda debated postponing this post till tomorrow (Thursday), purely for the sake of alliteration ;).Β  Between getting ready for my cousin’s engagement this weekend, spending time with my sister (and gearing up for the rest of my family who arrives later this week), and trying to stay on top of work, this post is going to be all of the place. Β Call it tangents or call it verbal typing diarrhea but here goes:

  • Last night we were out for dinner and I couldn’t help but laugh after hearing the neighboring table’s order: the girl ordered a Belgian chocolate smoothie whereas her date ordered a fresh orange juice and a chicken salad without the feta.Β  Any guesses who the waiter served the salad and juice to?Β  Apparently gender makes a difference in food preferences.
  • I dusted off one of my favorite kitchen appliances this weekend and I haven’t stopped using it since: the Benriner Spiraliser. Β For all you weirdos non-veggie lovers: Along with trying out different kinds of vegetables, experiment with different textures- you’ll be surprised by how much it can change a vegetable’s appeal:

  • Remember how I said 2013 was going to be the year I come out of my comfort zone?Β  Well I went to the hairdresser yesterday with the intention of just getting a trim.Β  I ended up chopping just under 4 inches off…the shortest my hair has been since I had head lice in elementary school!Β  Fortunately there were no tears and I am a fan :).
  • I always thought that the youngest child got pampered the most, but apparently the married child trumps all:

frametastic

As much as I wish my mom put up a spread like this every night, the above is only because my sister is in town.

  • And because this post is all over the place, I’ll leave you with an image that made me laugh:

Hand Jaws over a toothbrush ;)!

What’s your take on genderised foods?

What vegetable form are you currently loving?

  1. Ooh I’m getting my hair done tomorrow! I’m so glad you liked your hair, I bet you are looking dazzling! I’m just going for a colour (first in a year or more!) but I am looking forward to the change! I applaud you for going for something a bit daring – I’m sure it just emphasizes your beauty even more πŸ˜‰ Love that girl- The Belgian chocolate smoothie sounds amazing- go her! I often order a good local steak and goose fat potatoes when I dine out πŸ™‚ so gender equality for all menu options I say lol! I’m loving broccoli just broken with my hands (that’s what I call efficient!) and steamed with olive oil and acv splashed on it. Also loving torn kale pan fried- I’m always in a hurry at the moment so it’s just rip and go! Your mamma appears to be a fabulous cook! I’m getting hungry just thinking about that feast! It’s the same when my older brother comes home- it’s like the king is visiting lol πŸ™‚ Lots of hugs Sophia

    1. I’ve never tried cooking with ACV but I’m loving the sound of it with broccoli! And for what it’s worth, my brother arrives this weekend and I’m pretty sure the red carpet will be rolled out ;)!

      1. I splash it on just when it comes of the heat- it balances the oil beautifully! I am not a fan of garlic (I’m a terrible Italian lol) but my papa loves roasted garlic on top of this! Xo Sophia

        1. Ah I’m with you about garlic- as much as I love the taste, I rarely cook with it because of the post-breath effects of eating garlic ;)! And for it’s worth, I’m a terrible Indian who hates cilantro πŸ˜€

  2. Ahh I can so relate to why the waiter would serve the salad to the girl! I used to work in a French Patisserie, and the men would generally always go for a long black (Americano) and something plain like a croissant, while the ladies always went for lattes and cappuccinos with lemon or fruit tarts!
I am currently obsessed with raw carrot! I mean, I’ve always had a love for it, but lately I am eating up to 3 carrots a day! This would be okay except my skin has had an orange tinge for years because of my orange veg consumption! oops!

  3. That story is so true – I see it all the time. It’s kind of annoying how girls have this image as picky health-conscious eaters who order salads all the time. Guys always act impressed when I can polish off a big burger or steak or something. πŸ˜›

I would love to get a spiralizer – I love it when salads at restaurants have spiralized carrots and beets on it. But to be honest I’d probably be too lazy to do that at home haha.

    1. Haha trust me, the results look much fancier than the amount of effort required…it’s even easier than chopping up the veggie πŸ™‚

  4. Wow that is some kind of spread. Can I get remarried and have your mom cook for me? It looks amazing. I also love the idea of using a spiraliser, although I don’t think I could love my veggies more, but who knows. It may surprise me.
Last, but most definitely not least, I want to see the haircut. Pictures please. I bet you’re rocking your new do.

    1. Haha you are welcome over any time :)! I will definitely put up a picture soon…I’m yet to go down the “selfie” route πŸ™‚

  5. Oh I know that situation, the waiters are so irritated when I order a huge piece of red meat lol πŸ™‚
I want a spiraliser so bad, but I did not find one so far! I might have to get it in the U.S. when I fly over in a week.
Picture of your new haircut?? I will go tomorrow and I am thinking of cutting bangs……not sure yet! πŸ™‚

  6. Ugh, that first bullet point totally annoys me! I definitely believe that food is genderized…which, I think, is ridiculous!! I think that portion sizes for food are also genderized. Trust me, I can probably out-eat A LOT of men! πŸ˜‰

  7. I think people defnitely seems to be genderized…waiters tend to look a little surprised when I order onion rings with my dinner instead of sweet potato fries or a salad..I guess salads are more girly? Eric is a meat-and-potatoes guy, so I never really worry about the waiter mixing up our food πŸ˜‰

I’m the youngest, but I’ve never come home to meal quite like that!

      1. Haha I would hope people are genderised ;)! I’m kinda hoping that once I’m married, I’ll come home to a spread double the size…you know, being the youngest & all πŸ˜‰

  8. Those sharks… omigoodness! I’ve never thought about it, but the teeth seriously do make a huge difference. Huh. Who would have thunk.

And I’m not sure whether to laugh or shed a few tears about the restaurant situation. I definitely think that food is genderised (which my computer is trying to correct to tenderized), and I get a lot of surprised looks and comments that I “eat like a guy” when my appetite comes out in full force. Apparently… women aren’t supposed to eat πŸ˜•

  9. Share a pic of your new haircut! I’m sure it looks so pretty!

And I want a spiralizer. I may have to go get one soon. πŸ™‚

Have fun with your sister! And enjoy the wedding. Can’t wait to see pics!

  10. I want to see the new hair!!! I’m going to get my hair cut this Friday. I’ve wanted to get it cut short for AGES but I’ve never worked up the courage. It took me years to grow my hair – I can’t just imagine cutting it all off!

What veggies have you spiralised? I’ve only tried zucchini, and I’m in love with it.

Oh and I totally used to be that girl with a healthy date. One of my exes used to always order salad and other healthy things and it drove me crazy. There I was with my ribs, pizza, burgers, etc… the servers always got it mixed it up haha

    1. Try spiralising carrots, beetroot and pumpkin…they all work well! I tried cucumber too but it ended up being a bit too watery- go figure πŸ™‚

    1. Have you heard of the chocolate Yorkie? It’s a British chocolate and they candidly targeted their products based on gender…the regular was deemed “Not for women” whereas their raisin varieties had a pink wrap with a stick woman on the front!

  11. That’s so funny. Figured I’ll mention this.. I was once seeing this guy from LA.. he worked out and all.. we went to a sports bar in NYC and I ordered chicken nachos and he ordered a salad… and i was like you are sooooooooooo LA. When the waiter came around, he gave me the salad, and I was like no, I had the nachos. lol!!!!!!!!! Assumptions!
I’ve been eating lots of spinach lately.

  12. Ooo, I feel like a spiralizer would be so much fun to play with. And do we get a picture of this fresh new haircut? I wanna see! And oh man, chopping it all off feels so good–especially in the summer!

  13. Hahah! The gender ordering scenario, that happens to me and matt all the time! He’s usually pretty healthy and will get a sandwich or something with a side salad instead of fries. I however, always get French fries. They’re one of my favorite things about going out to eat, and since I can’t have the bread with the burger or sandwich, fries are a decent replacement. Anyway, the waiter always confuses our orders haha.

    1. Fried or not, fries are a great replacement for the a bunless burger…sometimes a few leaves on the side just ain’t gonna cut it πŸ™‚

  14. Haha, oh so true about genderized foods! Because we all know that *real* men don’t eat quiche, and ladylike women always order grilled chicken salads (hold the dressing!), right? πŸ˜‰ Even though I *do* know guys who eat salads, I think food genderization is still very prevalent, in large part due to marketing tactics. You rarely see Special K cereal or light ice cream, for instance, marketed to men; it’s always women. Likewise, triple quarter pounders or β€œbaconators” are always marketed to men.

I want to see a picture of the new β€˜do! Get on it, girl!

Wow, your mom really pulled out the stops! Everything looks delicious–are there any leftovers? πŸ˜‰ I hope you have a fantastic time with your sister, and that you enjoy the engagement celebrations this weekend! It sounds like you have a number of fun-filled days ahead!

    Big hugs! <3

    1. That’s so true about product positioning…I guess companies are aware which gender their product is more like to capitalise on! Hope you have a great weekend too, Sara πŸ™‚

  15. I’m so happy that I’m not the only one who truly gets a kick out of that shark meme! Also, I do find the waiter a little too-quick-to-assume when it comes to that scenario. Some men are health conscious too!

  16. The picture of the sharks is too funny, yes they do look much less menacing! Yay for a shorter hairstyle too! I bet your hair looks wonderful lady, give us a pic if you would like to πŸ™‚
And too true about the gender foods situation… I feel like I never see a guy ordering a salad and if he does, it might be considered “weird” or what’s wrong with him kind of thing. Dumbbbb. So many aspects of our culture and food need to be repaired and pronto

  17. I think I can take a wild guess as to who was served what. However, the word “Belgian chocolate” should’ve been a HUGE hint. Most women can’t resist the decadent temptation of…chocolate..mmm..

  18. Food is definitely genderized because of how women USED to order salads more than men~but lately I’ve been seeing a LOT OF BIG men ordering salads! So, times are changing indeed. πŸ™‚ And I’ve always been curious about the spiralizer. I like how it makes the veggies thin and easy to absorb the sauce, dressing, or whatever it’s being flavored with.

    1. If you are considering buying a spiralizer, I highly recommend it- I’ve gotten so much use out of mine πŸ™‚

  19. First off, can I say that lately it’s been taking forever to download your blog? For some reason it literally takes 5 minutes, I have no idea what has happened, especially since I haven’t experienced this with other blogs.

So glad you like your hair!

Oh and getting married doesn’t trump all, having the first grandkid does. πŸ™‚

    1. That’s so strange about my blog taking a while to load- thanks for letting me know :)! I better get married before my sis has babies…or my mom might just forget about me all together πŸ˜‰

  20. I think there is definitely a gender stereotype when it comes to food. I honestly cannot think of my guy friends who would order something more healthy than their date!

I chopped off so much of my hair a couple months ago and I totally regretted it. To make it worse, I made a spontaneous decision to go blond at the same time so now my hair is so wrecked from the bleach so I know it’ll take forever to grow back. Sigh.

    1. Ah I’m sure it’s not as bad as you think…and if so, good thing hair grows back fairly quick πŸ™‚
