Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Wanna come over? I have cookies!  Haha I’m kidding- I don’t really because the batch got wiped clean.  But I can offer you a recipe for Oatmeal Raisin Cookies with an all-star ingredient list including flaxmeal, oats, and other quote-on-quote superfoods.

They’re inspired by one of my all-time favorite cookies: the Oatmeal Raisin cookie at the Starbucks in Taj, Colaba.  I’m sure the recipe used is generic across their stores but I can only vouch for that specific branch.  Funny story about this cookie: Remember a couple of weeks ago I ran a race while my friend Maneka ran a half-marathon?  After brunch, we went to Starbucks and ordered an oatmeal raisin cookie to share.  At the time, a Starbucks manager had flown in from Seattle to train the staff here.  After seeing our race bibs, she insisted on giving us 2 cookies on the house.  I believe her exact words were “Y’all just ran a race, heck I’d be wanting my own cookie if I spent the morning running a half marathon”…I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I only ran 6 km.

Before I dole out the recipe, I’m going to preface it by saying don’t make them expecting a cookie like Ben’s, Millie’s, or Nestlé Toll House.  Those cookies are filled with butter and sugar…these are not.  However I will say that these cookies are healthy enough to justify eating more than one at a time but not so healthy that you question my credibility where cookies are concerned.  I made these for a few friends of mine and they all enjoyed ‘em…or at least I think they did ;)!

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Ingredients

  • ½ cup wholewheat flour
  • 1 ½ cup oats
  • ½ cup flaxmeal
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • ½ cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180*C
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flaxmeal, egg, brown sugar, honey and water.
  3. In a separate bowl, pour in the oats, flour, salt, and baking soda and mix well.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and then the raisins, cinnamon and vanilla extract.  Mix the batter until all the ingredients are well combined.
  5. Spoon out some batter and roll into a ball.  Place on to the cookie tray and repeat with the remaining batter
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the outer edges start to turn golden brown
  7. Allow to cool on a wire rack…if you can wait any longer 😉

Notes

  • Keep an eye on them as they are baking to avoid cookies which are tough & overcooked
  • Next time I want to try subbing out the raisins for chocolate chips & shaved coconut

  1. These cookies look so good – gonna bookmark the recipe to make as soon as I start adding sugar back in my diet. Those starbucks cookies were delicious but I think my all time favorites have to be the spinneys choc chip.

  2. a 6 km is totally worth a cookie. Hell, the first time I go out running again (it’s been a while – I don’t do cold or long distances on treadmills) I would totally follow it with a cookie.

    Is it weird that I’ve never had a Starbucks cookie? Or any of their baked goods? I guess that’s what I get for being a non-coffee drinker, I’m never actually in a Starbucks.

    1. Never had a Starbucks cookie? Don’t drink coffee? Never in Starbucks? Ah the blasphemy!! For your own pleasure, please try a Starbucks cookie ASAP :)!

  3. Oatmeal raisin cookies are my faaaavorite! And oh my gosh, YES, the Starbucks around here have absolutely amazing ones too, so maybe it is a generic recipe. If so, I want that recipe (to be alternated with your I’m sure MUCH healthier–but still tasty!–version ;D )

  5. i have a ginormous sweet tooth and it only gets bigger for cookies- choc chip & white choc macadamia are my fav. I love oatmeal ones as well. Its hard. very nice of her to give free cookies- heck ya! Would love to try them out sometime 🙂 i like how you are thinking about choc chips and coconuts!

    1. Believe it or not- I’ve never tried a Girl Scout cookie and I have no idea what a Tagalong is…I wish I were kidding :(!

  6. Completing ANY race–whether it be one mile or 26.2 miles–necessitates a *whole* cookie celebration. I’m sure glad that Starbucks manager agreed! I think it’s cute that she said “ya’all,” too; I bet you don’t hear silly American slang like that very often in India!

    These cookies look and sound deeelicious. I love that they’re healthy without being too healthy. I’d never question your cookie credibility, Khushboo!

    Hrmmm…favorite cookie? THAT is a tough question, my dear! I think I have two. Round cookie: peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip. Bar cookie: chocolate oat bars. Gah, now I want one of each! xoxo

  7. These remind me of individual baked oatmeal – cookies for breakfast? That sounds tasty! Crumbled on top of some Greek yogurt or dunked in milk… Yum 🙂 I love cinnamon raisin but I also love dark chocolate + coconut so both varieties sound good to me!

  8. I never used to be a fan of raisins until I adapted a healthier diet. But I have ALWAYS been a fan of oatmeal cookies. I would love to try making these :). My favorite cookies, however, are either frosted sugar cookies or peanut butter cookies. I LOVE PB :).

  9. I love chewy, fresh-from-the-oven cookies—especially ooey gooey chocolate chip cookies :)! Frosted sugar cookies are a fav of mine as well. That’s awesome that you were treated with a free cookie at Sbux :)!

  10. Mmmmm cookies… you just cannot go wrong with errr any kind?! Haha that is not a very narrow answer though, so I will choose my top THREE, I can’t have just one favorite 😉
    1) Molasses with sugar crystals on top
    2) Classic Chocolate chip
    3) Soft, oatmeal raisin, preferably warm out of the oven

    Lovin the recipe too, I know I would enjoy this one based on those ingredients!!

  11. hey, at least you ran 6 km.. that’s something, I would eat my own cookie for 6 km. haha. my favorite cookie.. gosh, chocolate chip cookie – soft, oatmeal raisin is like one of my favorites. your cookie looks great, definitely healthy! 🙂
