Weekend Reads

Tell me I am not the only one who did a double take at their calendar today! How is it already the last Friday of July?! I seem to be saying it at the end of every month so I may as well say it once more: This year is flying! Rather than put up a blog post as usual, I thought I’d share some links which I’ve enjoyed this week.   They’re all worth a read, especially when you have some free time on your hands this weekend:

  • When Your Definition of Healthy Changes: We are constantly bombarded with the notion that “Thin is in”.  It seems to have become general consensus that the “perfect figure” & “beauty” can only be attained by drastically controlling our dietary intake and always giving our 110% in workouts.  I’m all for eating a clean diet and regular exercise but this post was a huge eye-opener: there’s a fine line between eating and exercising for your health, and then overdoing it to a point that it becomes detrimental to your long-term well-being.  Although it’s not easy to pour your heart out over the Internet, I appreciated every single world Courtney posted about her struggles with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, and how she plans to do the unthinkable in terms of “healthy”: eat more and work out less.
  • 17 Ways Clueless Would be Different If It Came Out Now: I grew up on the movie Clueless.  I even watched it more times than Home Alone, which says a lot.  I know I can’t be the only one who wanted a virtual closet like Cher’s or who did the Rolling With the Homies move.  For those of you who were as much a Clueless fan, you need to check this out!

  • Olympic Ring Pancakes: The Olympics are finally here!  Even though the immigration queue in Heathrow is going to be a nightmare when I land next week and the whole city in general is going to be chaotic, I am psyched to experience the Olympics atmosphere first hand.  This pancake recipe is a fun way to celebrate the start of the Olympics, and who’s to say that only the athletes can carbo-load ;)!

  • Twitter cost the economy $1 billion yesterday: From my last post on hashtags, I’m sure you gathered that I’m somewhat of a Twitter fan.  After multiple attempts of trying to refresh my Twitter feed yesterday, I assumed there was a problem with my internet at home; it turns out the system was facing a worldwide problem.  Although I only lost out in terms of entertainment during TV ad breaks, it’s crazy to think how much influence a mere 140-characters can have on various industries.

  • 4 Cult-Like Food Fads: Given the rate that various food fads are popping up, eating styles seem to have turned into somewhat of a fashion statement.  This article provides great insight into four common food philosophies: Veganism, Gluten Free, Paleo, and Raw Diets.  Although I rather leave the labels for my clothes, I would consider myself a “Qualitarian”: I stick to quality foods whenever possible.

On that note, I’ll leave you with my lunch today, courtesy of The Table:

Vegetarian Burger with Caramelised Onions

It was delicious & filling, but where veggie burgers are concerned I remain partial to my homemade bean burgers.

What Olympics sport are you most looking forward to watching?

  1. Thanks so much Khushboo. (And, PS – your email was phenomenal and I will be responding to you as soon as I have the extra time to really put some thought into it. I really appreciate it!) 🙂 xoxo

  2. Awesome post Khushboo (as usual) I love that you summarised the links as well as posting about them 🙂
    x

  3. “Qualitarian” – LOVE IT! That’s my mentality too. I hate labeling myself more than I already do. Ha!

And Courtney’s post was a true eye opener…glad you mentioned it!

    1. I had (have) HA. I haven’t had a period for bout a year and half. I’m so glad my definition of health changed! However, I don’t know if it would’ve changed if my desire to be a mother wasn’t so great! My OCD tendencies probably would have continued to win over my mind battle. I’ve been eating A LOT more and exercising less. I don’t embrace my new curves and I certainly don’t like the fact that I don’t fit into my pants. But I did gain 10 Ibs in the last 3 months and I got my period back two weeks ago! I’ve shared this story many times..and at first I was hesitant. I didn’t want to put myself out there. But seeing that there’s so many of us struggling with the same issues, I decided to personal story. Our body knows what’s best for us so we must listen and honor it!!
I’ll join ya in labeling myself a qualitarian! Awesome!! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

      1. Wow thanks so much for sharing Min- really admire your honesty, especially the fact that you said that you aren’t embracing your curves! Even though you know it’s the right to think to do for your health, no one said gaining weight was easy…especially the mental side of it! Congrats on getting your period back, and I’m sure you are inspiring so many other girls to honor their bodies too!

  4. Haha, my boss is obsessed with the Olympics and I immediately sent her the link that pancake recipe! As for me, I like the Olympics in theory, but I’m not sure I’ll be watching a whole lot of them (aided by the fact that I don’t have a TV right now). I do want rainbow pancakes anyway, though…

  5. I would consider myself a qualitarian too. I can never label myself anything specific since I like to incorporate the best of all in my lifestyle.

  6. onehealthymunchkin

Thanks for the link to Courtney’s post – I’m hopping over to her blog to read it now!

And I was/am a big Clueless fan too! I’m pretty sure I could quote that movie by heart haha.

  7. lovely post! as always of course
and i am looking forward to – swimming, gymnastics, tennis [for all the wrong reasons, for all the drama], and athletics

  8. I’m not into the Olympics (I know, I’m lame – especially since one of my friends is kind of dating one of the swimmers, I *should* care…but I don’t). Pancakes sound good, though! And yay for Courtney, I’ll have to check out her post. Society makes eating seem unhealthy but it’s the healthiest thing you can do, next to drinking, when you think about it. After all, you’ll die waaaaaay sooner from not eating than not exercising! Crazy, right? 😛 Veggie burgers = awesome and WOW that Twitter has that much of a pull – I didn’t even notice that it was down until I saw Kaila’s tweet that it was back up!

  9. First of all..your lunch looks amazing. I am literally drooling (it doesn’t help that I am hungry) annnddd I love this post!! Thanks for sharing these links. Now I want pancakes.

  10. OMG!!! I want those pancakes! I’m glued to the Olympics – I’ll watch any event. It fascinates me to know that these people have trained all of their lived for this one event.

    1. It’s amazing right- yet the sad thing is that only the actual winners get the limelight! Regardless if the athlete comes 1st or not, he/she still deserves some recognition for the amount of training they dedicated themselves to!

  11. Mmmmm pancakes! That’s really getting into the spirit! I loved clueless so cant totally see Cher using Twitter and Instagram to document her outfits. I bet she would have even had a blog lol.

Hopping over to read Courtney’s post – sounds interesting 🙂

  12. OMG I totally grew up on Clueless as well I’ve lost count how many times I’ve watched, def did the ‘Rolling with the Homies’ move haha! That ’17 Ways Clueless would be different…’ was such a laugh, thanks for posting about it! The Olympic pancakes is such a fun idea to feel the vibe, olympic fever has set in a big way in my house…I even posted about an Olympic inspired mani I did this week haha! I love watching any of the Olypmic sports really! Its ridiculous I’m such a couch olympian haha..loving the gymnastics, diving, weightlifting and swimming (whoop!) uhh yeah and everything else lol! Your lunch looks delish and just checked out your bean veggie burger recipe, keen to try it out soon!

    1. Due to the time difference, I haven’t gotten much into the Olympics yet but that will change when I’m in London next week- I’m actually going for the Beach Volleyball quarter-finals which I’m psyched about 😀

      1. OMG! EEK you are so lucky you managed to get tickets, friends of mine haven’t been able to! I just watched some of the Beach Vollyball qualifications this past week, it’s pretty intense at times! It’s gonna be such fun, have an awesome time!!!
