Sushi love

There is one reason in particular why I can’t even imagine turning full-time vegetarian or giving up carbs: Sushi

Apparently it’s similar to marmite: you either love it or hate it.  Marmite I get, but why/how anyone could hate sushi is beyond me!  Especially after a recent sushi lunch out with my sister, my love for these Japanese rolls of deliciousness was only reinforced.
What’s not to like:
1) It tastes amazing: And this is coming from someone who grew up pretending to be allergic to fish in order to avoid having to eat it…although fish fingers didn’t seem to count.  As long as the rolls aren’t filled with cream cheese, tempura or mayo, I could easily eat any.
2) It’s healthy: There’s no doubt that eating fish is good for the body, and many types of sushi provide healthy doses of fish oils that help keep your cardiovascular system healthy. For the most part, sushi can easily provide various nutrients in one bite: omega 3’s & protein in the fish, reduced risk of cholesterol as well as vitamin A & C in seaweed, and iodine & calcium in fish meats like shrimp.  No wonder Japanese are known for their high life expectancy rate.
3) Infinite varieties: Although there are so many different fish types used, I tend to gravitate towards rolls filled with salmon, tuna, and eel.  I personally prefer the rolls filled with fish, but it’s a relief that I can still eat at sushi restaurants with my vegetarian friends who enjoy cucumber/avocado rolls.  Between the wasabi, ginger, Togarashi chili powder, and soy sauce, it’s easy to somewhat customize each roll on the spot.
Fortunately there is a sushi place 5 minutes away from my sister’s place in Guangzhou which serves the freshest-tasting sushi and thickest slabs of sashimi that I’ve ever had (as pictured above). I only wish that they served a few of the “Americanised” rolls like salmon avocado & spicy tuna.  If opting for Japanese food in China instead of Chinese is so wrong, I don’t want to be right :)!
Are you a sushi fan?  If so, what’s your favorite kind?  If not, I’m not sure we can be friends- kiiidding ;)!

  1. I am a huge sushi fan…twice a week I get my favorite Spicy Shrimp Avocado Roll from Whole Foods. It makes my Monday 100% better.

Happy Friday! Hope you have a great weekend.

  2. i do enjoy sushi, but i can’t eat the raw kind… are you not friends with me now? haha. i agree with ameena, i like the spicy shrimp avocado rolls – provided it is cooked.. i love the veggie rolls, sometimes i ask them to add cream cheese – that’s the American in me!

  3. Before I went vegan I had a testy relationship with Sushi. When I first tried it during my first year of uni I loved it but a nasty meal at Yo Sushi a couple of years later put me off of it for good. I do like going to Sushi places with a group however because finding a veggie option is inevitable and I don’t stick out like a sore thumb – even if it’s just edamame, miso soup and an avocado roll – I’m happy.

  4. Omg. I read this post in the afternoon and even though I’d cooked lunch already, I went n bought some sushi. Love it. And I’m vegetarian.

  5. Oh man Marmite is absolute dirt. It is horrid. So is vegemite. I don’t get fish on my sushi (vegetarian alert) but I do eat a lot of “sushi” with a variety of vegetables. Brown rice with avocado and cucumbers, veggie mix, anything with a lot of wasabi.

  6. SUUUUSHI. Spicy crab, sunset roll (at my sushi place, it’s spicy crab topped with salmon), scallop tempura, shrimp & salmon nigiri…so many!

  7. I think sushi is one of those things that polarises people – you either love it or you hate it. If it’s fresh and colourful and full of flavour and texture, it’s hard to beat xx

  8. As a vegetarian, sushi options are obviously limited, but Trader Joes sells some amazing vegetarian sushi/tempura for on-the-go. We’ve also made sushi at home with random fillings like shredded carrots and pickles.

I LOVE sushi! I could eat it every day, but I try to keep it to only once a week. 😛

My favourites are salmon rolls, tuna rolls and salmon sashimi! Also I love seaweed salad and order it every single time!

  10. oh my gosh, I LOVE sushi!!!!
    That’s a food I could eat everyday (if I could afford it! 😛 )
It’s really hard to pick my favorite but I like salmon a lot.
Rainbow rolls are fun too, I get to eat all kinds of fish!

  11. Reading this post is making me crave ST sushi for dinner. Let’s see how I am going to manage S to eat there again tonight. Wish you were still here, I know you’d definitely be up for round 4 of ST:)
