Getting your priorities straight

Coming across an (old) interview with Michelle Obama inspired me to write this post.  In the interview, she explains that working out is a priority for her even if she has to get up at 4am.  When the interviewer asked her how her diet has changed since moving into the White House (the interview took place in 2009), she responded with:

Overall it’s good, but there are some great bakers here. I’m not complaining, because I live in the White House, and it’s really nice here. But if you like pie, it will be there–always–at every meal (laughs). So for me, it’s about setting up new boundaries.”

One thing that irks me is when people say they want to eat healthy or exercise but they “can’t” or “don’t have the time”.  No matter how many excuses the person tries to come up with, I can only hear 2 letters: B.S.!  We all have busy lives, we all have something else we rather do, we all have endless to-do lists.  Yes, forming and sticking to a routine is hard.  I get that and I’m right there with you.  As much as I put on an “I love to work out and eat vegetables” face on my blog, that doesn’t mean I don’t have my weak moments too.  Occasionally I’d rather throw my phone against the wall when the alarm goes off in the morning instead of putting my trainers on.  Sometimes I want to have another piece of cake even though I know I’ve had enough.  Some days I wonder how much easier it would be to order take-out instead of cooking my meals.  But you can bet your ass I don’t, at least not always. To put it simply, if good health  really matters to you, you will make the time.  We all know what to do, it’s just a matter of actually doing itYou have to make your health a priority, even if that means waking up at a crazy hour in the morning to work out, saying “no” sometimes, or carrying healthy packed lunches to work.  If I’m not going invest in building and maintaining a strong and healthy body, how can I expect it to ultimately support me in other endeavors in my life?  And at the risk of sounding vain, if I’m going to keep stuffing myself or create excuses that I’ll “make up workout tomorrow”, why should I expect my jeans size to stay the same?   More than just good health, I think this next sentence applies to various aspects in life: unless you are driving, there are no shortcuts in life; if you aren’t going to put in the work, don’t expect success.  It’s as easy as that.

Is your health a priority?

  1. LOVE this post! You are absolutely right – if you don’t take the steps to take care of your body now, why should it take care of you later.

I make my health a priority by working with all the factors that are in my control – exercise, healthy eating, treating myself every now and then, giving myself “mental breaks,” etc. Health can’t be viewed as a short term thing – it takes a lot of time and effort, and you really reap what you sow. 🙂

  2. LOVED THIS!! esp love that quote/photo.. people make wayyy too many excuses when they just need to DO IT.. and its easy and fun and really not as bad/hard as people make it out to be!

  3. Amazing! Loved what you had to say 🙂 and that quote pic is freakin awesome, I gotta print that fo sho. Health is definitely my priority now, it wasn’t during my ED sadly. I’m just glad to be out of that dumb mindset!!

  4. Khushboo the motivator! Very true- and my health is definitely a priority; plus you can NEVER regret exercising even if it took quite an effort to actually get to the gym/track/etc. For me, it’s a lot easier to eat healthy as opposed to go to the gym, but I still try to be active on the days I don’t go- cleaning, making sure I’m not laying on my butt all day etc.

  5. what a glorious post! I totally agree with you and always tell people life is about personal choices and priorities. Everyone of us chooses one thing over the other and if something is very important to you, you MAKE time for it, no matter what. I keep trying to explain to people why I enjoy getting up an extra hour earlier to squeeze in a yoga or running workout and make a nice breakfast + pack my lunch, but a lot of them just dont seem to understand it. after all, I got quite a routine in multitasking in the morning and i somehow really enjoy it.

  6. Great post and you are so right. Everything worth it in life takes hard work, including a healthy, fit body (and mind!). I also get annoyed by people who complain yet don’t do anything to improve their situation!

  7. Grat post, especially as I keep procrastinating atm ;p. Just getting out there are DOING it is the only thing that’s gonna get results you are so right – time and effort pay off big time! Health is always a priority for me – even if it means being the ultimate health freak taking my peanut butter out clubbing, I wouldn’t haveit any other way!

I agree with this post 100% 🙂 Health is definitely something you should make a priority-it exercising or being active is something that should just being part of your life. I’ve learned to make health a precedence-incorporating exercise into my daily routine even if I have to wake up early!
