Something to celebrate

Since 1950, the World Health Organization (WHO) has celebrated April 7th as National Health Day.  The celebration aims to create awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern.  World Health Day 2011 is focusing on the growing threat antimicrobial resistance.

According to WHO, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  To me, health encompasses much more than what I eat or how much exercise I can fit in.  Good health is a way of life.   Good health is something which fits around my life and not vice versa.  It’s something that keeps me strong and is sustainable in the long-term.  My idea of healthy living probably differs from your conception. To me, it means:

  • Eating real, whole foods with the occasional treats
  • Indulging every so often without feeling guilty
  • Incorporating regular activity into my daily life
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Sleeping for a minimum of 7 hours per night
  • Focusing on the ‘big picture’ rather than sweating about the small stuff
  • Being satisfied and confident about the choices I make
  • Spending time with my friends, family, and basically people who make me feel good about myself
  • Living, Laughing, and Loving

Wishing you Happy World Health Day!

What does health mean to you?

All your great posts show help show how being healthy can easily be incorporated in to our lives rather than taking over our lives! Btw, tried out your carrot and coconut muffins and black bean burgers and they were delicious!! They both will surely make a more frequent appearance in my meals!!!
