Time for a twist

Do you like sushi? I love sushi.  If my stomach could handle it, I would happily eat my body weight in sushi.  Calling all freakshows: who does not like sushi???  Other than the wonderful taste and texture inherent to sushi, just the act of eating sushi is fun: from preparing your soy sauce & wasabi bowl to sampling ‘one of each’ to even refereshing your palate with ginger.  Especially once you master the art of using chopsticks (don’t worry if you haven’t quite yet…God gave us hands for a reason after all ;)), there’s nothing like devouring a piece of sushi in one bite and letting the roll deconstruct in your mouth.  And of course, it doesn’t hurt to know that as long as you’re not eating mayonaise-loaded, tempura-filled rolls, sushi is a pretty healthy option…sorry, rephrase: very healthy option.

I’ve been meaning to attempt making sushi at home for the longest time but my great plans are always short-lived due to not owning a rolling mat.  I finally bit the bullet during my trip in London and bought a bamboo rolling mat.  I decided that tonight was the day to whip it open and test it out. After much searching online for a specific recipe, I decided to just wing it.  Considering I’m in Mumbai, finding ingredients like Soy spread and rice vinegar posed whole new missions which I wasn’t bothered to tackle.  Hence I went with the next best option: cross my fingers, chuck a few things together, roll, cut and hope for the best…and believe it or not, it actually worked! I got a tad excited in the kitchen and decided to put a spin on nomal sushi.  The result was a Lebanese-inspired rolI: I bring to you: Quinoa & Teriyaki Prawn Makis

In the mix:
  • Quinoa
  • Avocado
  • Teriyaki prawns
  • Cucumber
  • Grated carrot
These rolls reminded me of stuffed vine leaves, and hence I had no choice but to use houmous as a dipping sauce for one of the rolls.  For the second roll, I went with the classic, i.e. soy sauce & wasabi.

The verdict: I think they turned out quite well, if I must say so myself.  As long as you have the ingredients ready at hand, the actual process of making it is very simple.  And believe it or not, I didn’t even end up using the rolling mat.  When I took it out of the packet, I was absolutely clueless about what to do with it, so I decided to make do without it. And of course, the combination of ingredients could only mean one thing: it tasted pretty damn good.  I would definetely recommend giving these rolls a go.  I just added the recipe to My Recipes so have a look…

Something corny..just for good measure:

Q: What did sushi A say to sushi B?
A: Wasssap B? (Wasabi)
