Doin’ it doggy style

Is it me or does the term ‘downward dog’ sound incredibly dirty?? Sorry to tarnish the purity attached to yoga but I’m just saying it how it is :). On a more blog-related note, downward dawg is one of the most well-known yoga poses where you are on all fours and your back is arched.

For the last 2 months or so, I got in the groove of doing yoga. Because yoga doesn’t get your heart pumping in the same way as running, I used to scoff at the idea of it being beneficial. How wrong was I! Once I started doing it properly, I could feel the benefits, both mentally and physically. While it has both a calming and cleansing mental effect, a single session will stretch & tone all your muscles from your triceps to your core to your glutes. Sounds pretty good now, eh? Plus Jennifer Aniston is a fan which is enough to convince me :).

Staying healthy requires a holistic approach which embraces your mind, body & soul. And in my opinion, yoga is the perfect suplement to eating nutritionally. The great thing about yoga is that your session can be as long or short as your time permits.

Although there are are loads of different forms of yoga, I am currently loving Surya Namaskaras, which is a set of 12 movements/poses (see the picture below). I do about 20-30 rounds of it per session, and try to hold each pose for about 5 seconds. That being said, I am flirting with the idea of starting other forms such as Bikram or Power yoga when I return to Bombay.

And to end on a humorous note (because that’s just how I like to roll ;)), here’s a joke which never gets old:

Me: hmmm it smells like UpDawg in here
You: huh? What’s UpDawg?
Me: not much, what’s up with you?
