Got milk?

Anyone who knows me will vouch for my extremist personality.  When I like something…I don’t just like it…I love it…I get kind of obsessed and eat it several times a week.  Even though 3 years have already passed, my love affair with butternut squash and homemade tomato sauce is still going strong.  That’s why I feel like I have to devote a post to my newest find…or should I say, my latest catch:  SOY MILK!  Believe it or not, it actually tastes legendairy!

I don’t know what allured me into actually purchasing tetra packs of both the original and chocolate flavour but I‘m so glad I did.  Because you can rarely go wrong with chocolate, I tried that packet first and in 1 word: WOW!  It felt like I was having the mother of all milks.  It has a great nutty flavour and a creamy texture, yet it is so low in calories and saturated fat: 0.36g per 200 ml.  Not only that, chocolate soy milk is a great post-workout drink: it has a good combination of carbohydrates and protein which help with muscle formation and recovery.

In terms of health benefits, the ‘natural’ flavour is even better for you.  It has no preservatives: just soy beans and water.  Along with drinking it by the glass, I loved it in my breakfast this morning: oats, flaked almonds, apple and banana soaked overnight in soy milk and some sweetener (Splenda, Agave, honey…whatever takes your fancy)!  I know I sound like a walking advert for the stuff but it’s just too tasty not to share.  After googling it, I was pleasantly surprised to read of its numerous benefits:

  • Reduces cholesterol
  • Unlike cow’s milk, it’s rich in omega 3’s and 6’s: good fats which are essential for so many bodily functions
  • Healthy source of vegetarian protein.  In fact a glass of soy milk contains the same amount of protein as eggs
  • Powerhouse of isoflavones.  In more simple terms, it helps with preventing heart diseases, osteoporosis, symptoms of menopause, and certain types of cancer
  • Vegan-friendly which means you’re doing your bit for the world
  • Full of so many vitamins and minerals which are essential to our body and skin (e.g. vitamins B & E and iron)

So am I a convert? Most definitely and I strongly urge you give it a chance.  After all, what do you really have to lose doodh (dude)?
